Back to the Bays Stewardship Sessions: We’re a Go!

Fieldwork is currently underway, growing season for our plants and shellfish is upon us, and we’re excited to bring back in-person involvement opportunities to help CCE Marine Program in all of it via our Back to the Bays Stewardship Sessions!

Here’s the deal for this year:

Design: Each month we will be featuring a special topic or species that our stewardship programming will be designed around.  Throughout the month we’ll offer numerous FREE involvement opportunities for you.  These involve working side by side with our educators and experts on a variety of activities including work in our coastal plant nurseries, monitoring and tagging horseshoe crabs, helping seed the bay with shellfish, and much more!  May was all about helping our “Marine Meadows”, our native coastal plants, and June will be all about our local Horseshoe crab populations.

Capacity: We’ve restructured our stewardship activities to take into consideration all health and safety measures we need to have in place, and will be limited in how many participants we can engage in each session this year.

* Back to the Bays Members get priority registration and access to exclusive members-only experiences, so be sure to sign up today! Become a Member.

Location: Tiana Bayside Facility will be the main hub of our Stewardship Sessions this year.  We will occasionally host sessions at our other facilities and on location at restoration sites, but a majority of this year’s programing will be offered at our Hampton Bays facility

Staying In Touch: In some cases, stewardship opportunities pop up with short notice based on our needs for extra hands, and may need to be altered due to weather and other conditions.  We will keep our Events Calendar updated, but also encourage you to check the Members Login section frequently for program offerings and new opportunities as they arise.  You can also reach out directly to our Back to the Bays Volunteer Coordinator Hazel Wodehouse at 631-566-1215 or hew57@cornell.edu

Registration: Advance registration for all of our Stewardship Sessions is required. If you plan on participating in numerous sessions this year, and want to be one of our official Back to the Bays Stewards, we encourage you to come on board as an official volunteer. Application materials available here.
