ArtSea Sessions and Programs!

Art and science both require careful and keen observational skills! Many artists whether professional or novice are inspired by nature. Our Back to the Bays Initiative invites you to participate in our educational and fun art & science, ArtSea sessions and programs which raise awareness for marine species that our marine scientists at CCE work with here on Long Island.

Upcoming ArtSEA Programs

Buoys for the Bays

The Buoys for the Bays Art + Science Initiative is designed to raise awareness and funding to support the work of Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program! Participants will be guided through the steps to create a marine-themed painting on a reclaimed fishing buoy at workshops throughout the year or local artists can pick up a reclaimed buoy to Buoys will be displayed in special exhibitions in collaboration with partnering entities, then auctioned off in support of our bays.

Art + Awareness Events

We team up with local artists and a local craft beverage producer such as a brewery and vineyard, to help draw attention to the importance of preserving underwater and coastal habitats. Artists create work inspired by these essential habitats, and the marine creatures that rely on them, for exhibit and sale. Exhibit opening celebrations are displayed throughout the year and proceeds from all sales will support local artists as well as the preservation and restoration efforts of CCE Marine Program. If you have a project idea or topic you would like us to create a project for please reach out ArtSea director Carolyn Munaco cjm427@cornell.edu

These crowd-pleasing ArtSea Sessions allow guests to learn about our local marine environment while creating a marine inspired work of art! Proceeds directly support CCE's Back to the Bays Stewardship Projects. ArtSea Sessions feature a variety of projects using different mediums. The projects range from your typical “paint & sip” acrylic painting on canvas to a a project off the beaten path with an assemblage of broken shells! Ideal settings for this event include restaurants, wineries and breweries, or cultural centers. On the evening of the event, CCE Marine Program Educators provide a brief presentation on the topic or species at hand, and then a professional artist guides even the most novice artists in creating a work of art inspired by the presentation. We provide all materials, and can accommodate up to 30 participants. Show your patrons or friends you care about our local waters by hosting one, or a series of ArtSea Sessions!
