Stewardship Session ~ Monarch Tagging , Seed Collecting & SEAd Bomb Making

Monarch butterfly tag & release, seed collecting & SEAd Bomb making for coastal habitat restoration.

Back to the Bays Stewardship Session! Join us for an evening in the garden by the bay. We will be tagging and releasing monarch butterflies, seed collecting, and SEAd bomb making for coastal habitat restoration. We are tagging the butterflies as part of Monarch Watch's citizen science data collection and restoration efforts.

Monarch Watch Vision Statement: In recognition of the rapid loss of habitats and resources needed by monarch butterflies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, it is clear that the preservation of the monarch migration will require stewardship by the governments and private citizens of all three countries. We all must work together to create, conserve, and protect monarch habitats. Sustaining monarch habitats will have the effect of protecting vital pollinators and other wildlife.

Quogue Stewardship Site Spat on Shell Oyster Reef Planting

Meet our team outside the Clubhouse at the Quogue Field Club by 9am. Once gathered, the group will walk across the golf course towards the water (approx. 10min casual walk). Participants will hear about the work we are doing at our Quogue Stewardship Site and learn about spat-on-shell oysters and reef restoration.

We will then divide up into teams to count and measure the baby oysters (spat), and then help plant them on our reef site. Be prepared to get wet (up to knees) and possibly a little muddy.

Boots, water shoes, or secured sandals are recommended (no flipflops). The group will return to the Clubhouse no later than 11:30am.

ABOUT BACK TO THE BAYS QUOGUE STEWARDSHIP SITE:

2026 marks the third season of our Quogue Stewardship Site oyster reef restoration efforts. Established in August 2024 with the first spat-on-shell planting, we have been monitoring the reef and planting additional oysters every year since.

On June 2nd, Aquaculture Specialist, Kate Rossi-Snook, completed our most recent monitoring, and the reef looks amazing. Our oldest oysters are huge - some approximately 6 inches or larger! Kate also observed multiple mating horseshoe crab pairs, many young blue crabs, and a large pipefish seeking shelter in the oysters.

On June 10th, our oyster restoration raft located at the Post Lane bridge was stocked with its first round of spat-on-shell for the 2026 growing season. The strong tidal flow at this site allows for amazing oyster growth in their hanging baskets - this is ideal because the larger the oysters are at planting, the more likely they are to survive to spawning adulthood. We look forward to pulling them out of the water, checking their growth, and planting them at our reef site on July 7th. Another round of fresh spat-on-shell will be added to the raft, so keep an eye out for a second reef planting event to be announced for early August!

We are grateful to all of our private donors, the Quogue Association, and the Southampton Water Quality Improvement Program. Their support has allowed us to significantly expand our oyster restoration work at this site and we look forward to continuing to track its growth and success.

Now it's time to get your feet wet and have some fun - we hope some of you join us at our planting events!

Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program and Stony Brook University are working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to coordinate and implement this project.

The intent of this network is to encourage participants to get involved with our annual horseshoe crab monitoring program on various reference beaches throughout New York’s Marine District. Participants assist with the collection of scientific data that is used to assess the status of horseshoe crabs in NY State, and will help determine the management and conservation of this important species throughout the region.

Horseshoe Crab Monitoring at Tiana Bayside

Become a "citizen scientist" and help us count and tag local horseshoe crabs coming to shore at night to lay their eggs!

Join us in a state-wide effort to monitor our local horseshoe crab population and collect data that will inform policy that will help sustain their population for generations to come!

Back to the Bays, an initiative of CCE Marine Program, oversees the monitoring of horseshoe crabs at the Tiana Bayside site, in Hampton Bays. To register for a date at this location, please signup here on Eventbrite, or contact our site coordinator, Danielle Morris at dm733@cornell.edu, 516-306-0958.

Yes, this work is conducted at night, under the full or new moon, when horseshoe crabs come ashore to lay eggs! Be prepared to walk along the shore and wade into water if needed.

How to prepare:

  • Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled monitoring time to get oriented

  • Dress for the weather, rain or shine (only thunderstorms may cause cancellations)

  • Wear waders or tall boots, or water shoes when water is warm enough - we only have a handful of waders to borrow

  • Extra flashlights and headlamps are helpful - we only have 2 to borrow

  • Instructions, data sheets, clip boards, and tools are provided

  • Familiarize yourself with thisSample Data Sheet (waterproof sheets will be provided)

  • ReviewQuadrat + Count Protocols (Volunteer coordinator will teach methods)

Please note: there are multiple dates and times to register for throughout the season. Please take extra care to register for the date and time you would like to attend.
