Long Island Marine and Coastal Field Guide

Cover of Long Island Marine and Coastal Field Guide, written by Hazel Wodehouse, and illustrated by Carolyn Munaco.

This year, Back to the Bays has had the pleasure to finally release our first official field guide, Long Island Marine and Coastal Field Guide.

This field guide is written by Back to the Bays staff Hazel Wodehouse, who classified each organism and wrote all of the information about each species, as well as detailed descriptions of Long Island's diverse marine habitats that they can be found in, and illustrated by Carolyn Munaco, who painted over 250 species for the field guide.

This project began during the COVID-19 pandemic and was finally released this year. It was presented and officially launched for the first time at Borghese Vineyard.

Designed to be waterproof and durable, this practical resource will provide a visual field guide to the flora and fauna found in Long Island’s unique marine habitats, including our eelgrass meadows, salt marshes, oyster reefs, and ocean beaches. We believe that this guide will become a trusty companion for students, teachers, and citizen naturalists of all ages as they explore and appreciate Long Island’s diverse environmental landscapes.

Field guides will be available for purchase on our website: https://backtothebays.org/shop/p/long-island-marine-and-coastal-field-guide-pre-order

The Back to the Bays staff is very proud of Carolyn and Hazel, and we are all excited to use the field guide in our day-to-day work life and adventures!
