Meet the Marine Team: Kristin Gerbino

This week, let’s take a few minutes to meet another member of the CCE Marine Team, Kristin Gerbino!

Buying local seafood supports the economic viability of our coastal fishing communities and small businesses which need our support more than ever right now.

Kristin is a Fisheries Specialist who has been with us for 17 years as of 2021! She has done some great work in support of local, sustainable fisheries.

To learn more about Kristin, check out this mini-interview we had with her recently!

  1. How long have you been with CCE Marine Program?
    17 years

  2. What's your position title?
    Fisheries Specialist

  3. Why is it important to choose locally caught fish when purchasing seafood?
When you choose local seafood, you can be sure it is sustainably harvested and in compliance with strict U.S. and state regulations. Imported seafood can be unregulated, mislabeled, overfished, and farm-raised in unhealthy conditions. Buying local seafood supports the economic viability of our coastal fishing communities and small businesses which need our support more than ever right now.

  4. What part of your job would people find most surprising?
Some days I come home from work very dirty and stinky from working on a boat and handling fish. People may be surprised to learn that I consider these to be the best days “at the office.” I love to work hard and be on the water even if I do get very seasick!

  5. What is one local species you wish more people knew about, and why?
Porgies (aka scup) are so versatile and a great local fish option instead of other imported, farm-raised species such as tilapia. The meat is white, flaky, and sweet and it works well in so many recipes. They are inexpensive, plentiful on Long Island, and easy to catch.

  6. What do you do for fun outside of work?
I love being at the beach with my family and teaching my kids about the marine environment while doing fun things like surfing, swimming, and fishing. I love to travel, foster rescue dogs, read, run and cook lots of local seafood.

  7. If you could be any marine species what would you be?
    A sea turtle.

  8. Why?
They are relaxed and graceful just swimming along in the ocean.

Thank you for all that you do, Kristin!

We’ll be back next week with another staff spotlight from the CCE Marine Team!
