Try Local F.I.S.H: Fun Tasting Event Coming Up!

Eating healthy, sustainable, local seafood is something everyone can do in support of the health of our ecosystem, and to support a healthy diet as well.  Unfortunately, a lot of the most common seafood items you see on menus and in fish markets are imported and in many cases harvested or grown using less than sustainable practices.  Our Local F.I.S.H. Initiative is on a mission to help transform the seafood industry by working with the local fishing community, chefs and consumers to promote use and consumption of local, sustainable species. They will be partnering with Five Ocean on August 3rd for a very special event designed to introduce people to lesser known varieties of seafood!  Working with Chef and Owner of Five Ocean, Craig Atwood along with 5 additional talented local chefs, our Fisheries Team is helping to curate an evening of local seafood sampling to enable guests to try delicious local seafood tastings while learning about the importance of sustainable fisheries.  Proceeds will support the great work of the F.I.S.H. Initiative and enable our Fisheries Team to keep momentum going in providing meaningful outreach and education about sustainable seafood in our communities. Tickets available here.

Perhaps you can’t join us at the event, but still want to become a more informed and responsible seafood consumer? You may be wondering, “where do I even start?”.  Well, we have you covered and welcome you to check out the many resources compiled by our Fisheries Program to get you going on your sustainable seafood journey! Head over to localfish.org and you’ll discover that there are an abundance of local, indigenous, sustainable, delicious seafood varieties that you as a consumer can help push for! We have compiled a comprehensive listing of resources to help you learn what species are harvested locally and sustainably, where to find them, and even how to cook them!  Through a collaboration with nutritionist Stefanie Sacks, numerous recipes and cooking tutorials are available to give you the knowledge and confidence you need to prepare local fish at home! People may be intimidated by the thought of cooking things like bluefish, skate, or even more common varieties like sea scallops and fluke but we’ll walk you through it all!

The Local F.I.S.H. Initiative team will be out and about all summer long helping spread the word at various fish markets and festivals so follow them @long.island.fish to see where to catch them, and how to support them through events like the upcoming Tasting Dinner with Five Ocean + Friends, and more events to come.  So remember, next time you visit your local fish market or restaurant-choose local fish!

CCE Fisheries Specialist Kristine Gerbino heads up the F.IS.H. Initiative. For more information about the program check out localfish.org or contact her at kk334@cornell.edu
