Stewardship Session: Shell Bag Assembly
Help our Aquaculture Coordinator create bags of oyster shells for our spat-on-shell oyster reef restoration projects!
This volunteer opportunity will entail: cutting and tying mesh to create bags; shoveling cured shell into the bags; neatly stacking bags off to the side. Gloves can be provided, but we encourage you to bring your own. Expect to get mildly wet and/or dirty, depending on conditions.

Brewery Lecture Series: Blue Carbon @ Westhampton Beach, June 6

Earth Day - Blue Carbon Habitat Restoration
Join us this Earth Day to learn about Blue Carbon Habitats and the role of coastal plants in mitigating climate change. Help create SEAd bombs, which help to repopulate coastal plants that support pollinators, sequester carbon, and prevent erosion.
Earth Day at Sag Harbor Cinema w/ Back to the Bays
A screening of Anne Belle’s 1976 film short film Baymen– Our Waters are Dying, recently restored by the New York Public Library, together with Greek filmmaker Leon Loisios’ Fishermen and Fishing (1961). Followed by a presentation by the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Back to the Bays initiative, with a special focus on the Sag Harbor Stewardship Site.
Beachgrass Planting in Hampton Bays
Help us plant 4000 culms of beachgrass along Dune Rd in Hampton Bays. This area needs a good healthy planting of native beachgrass to protect and preserve our shorelines from erosion and runoff.
*Please bring work gloves to protect your hands!

Oyster Reefs, Eelgrass Meadows, and Living Shorelines: Restoring Habitats and Hope
For over 20 years, Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program has worked with Shelter Island to enhance the harvestable stocks of oysters, hard clams, and scallops through its Town Reseeding Program. This year, that work expanded to include eelgrass plantings and the creation of an oyster reef by adding Shelter Island to the network of Back to the Bays Stewardship Sites. Meet Islander Kate Rossi-Snook of CCE Marine and learn about shellfish aquaculture for restoration, the importance of oyster reefs and eelgrass meadows, and the broader ecological and cultural value of living shorelines.

Field Guide Art Exhibit - From Macroalgae to Marine Mammals
Over 250 original paintings by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program resident artist Carolyn Munaco are to be featured in their forthcoming field guide. A subset of the species included in the publication will be on view at East Northport Library Proceeds from artwork sales will directly support CCE’s field guide project and related education and outreach efforts. The field guide initiative is designed to inspire the public to get out and enjoy all of the magnificent species that call our area home, from macroalgae to marine mammals!
